The Christmas Journey December 8, 2007
By Thomas Kittrell
The husband took his pregnant wife to
On orders issued by Caesar, a hardship for them
The journey was treacherous, filled with danger
There Mary would lay her newborn son in a manger

There was no room in the inn for the woman in labor
But from the most Holy Father she received favor
Mary gave birth to the infant conceived from above
A gift of the Father, a sacrifice of His great love

Shepherds nearby attending their flocks by night
Were summoned to go and see this marvelous sight
In great haste they went so they could see and behold
For themselves what the angel of the Lord had foretold

The wise men began their journey, they must travel far
To seek the Christ child, they had seen His star
Precious gifts were prepared, for the One most holy
He would be born in

To Herod they came, and he was troubled by this thing
The news of fulfilled prophecy, the arrival of a new king
“Find the child and report back to me,” he replied
“I wish to worship Him also,” the wicked monarch lied

“Do not return to Herod,” in a dream they heard God say
So the wise men returned to their country another way
To Egypt Joseph fled with wife and newborn child by night
Being warned of God of Herod’s evil, murderous plight

“It’s ok to go home,” God revealed to Joseph while he slept
Herod was dead and no longer in
The road home ended in
A fulfillment of what prophets of old had divinely foreseen

The journey was not yet complete, for there was more ahead
It led to a cruel cross, where Jesus’ precious blood was shed
Three days later, victory over death would at last be won
By the resurrected Savior, God’s beloved and only Son

The Christmas journey is not about going to shop for a gift
And looking for bargains, with an eye out for thrift
Nor the amount of time and money we spend in our sprees
It is not about reindeer and decorated Christmas trees

It is all about the trip from Heaven to sinful earth by One
Who was sent by the Father, the journey of His Holy Son
In believers’ hearts Christmas is a very special time to celebrate
The journey of the Holy King to earth from Heaven’s gate
